In Homecoming by Cynthia Voigt, Dicey, age 13, James, age 10, Maybeth, age 9, and Sammy, age 6, are abandoned by their mother in the middle of Connecticut in a parking lot. They have to find their way to Aunt Cilla’s house because she is their only relative Dicey knows. With very little money and food, the Tillermans walk all the way to Bridgeport to find out that Aunt Cilla is dead and their Cousin Eunice is the only one there. They live with Cousin Eunice for a while, then later travel to their Grandma’s house. One symbol in the story is the long road, and it symbolizes all four children’s hardships, their hopelessness, and their poverty. Another symbol is the sailboat, and it symbolizes the hope the children need and Dicey’s want to be†¦show more content†¦To cite another instance, when the children were on the road, â€Å"‘Dicey?’ Maybeth said. ‘Yes, Maybeth,’ Dicey answered, without turning her head. Food, money, a way forward [on the road]. They had none. [Maybeth said] ‘What’s wrong?’ Dicey almost laughed. ‘What’s right?’ is what she wanted to answer, but she didn’t speak. Never mind the way forward [on the road], you couldn’t get without money and they had none,† (p.94). This verifies that one symbol is the long road and it symbolizes all four children’s hardships, their hopelessness, and their poverty because nothing right is going on in their lives. On the long road, you couldn’t get money to buy food. That shows poverty. On the road, they have to walk a long way forward while they are hungry and tired. Now that the children are stopping and just giving up, it shows that they have no hope in themselves. If they had hope, Dicey could’ve kept walking and find people to give her a job so she can earn money. For now, they are hopeless with no money or food on the long road. Another symbol is the sailboat and it s ymbolizes the hope the children need, and Dicey’s want to be accepted and taken in by her grandmother. Furthermore, the sailboat is damaged and ugly, but Dicey finds hope in it, and had thoughts of fixing it and sailing it with her grandmother and siblings. For instance, when Dicey discovers the boat, the text states, â€Å"A sailboat. It was small, only fourteen or fifteen feet. ItShow MoreRelatedU.s. For Poe and the writing of the raven was none out of the ordinary for himself as most wo rks that he had produced at the time had a dark theme usually revolving around the death of a loved one as well as never seeing them again. Throughout his life, Poe faced problems of failed honor and insanity—issues that paradoxically help to account for a literary authority that established precedents and patterns of literature in his home region—and even beyond the South itself. Whether fully conscious of his aims, Poe found ways to deal imaginatively with the inexpressible, the horrors that the mind can conjure, and the dark side of experience—without revealing any more of the inner torture than he wished to convey to his readership. â€Å" (http://nationalhumanitiescenter.org/) what the meaning of this is that Poes life was quite hard and this reflected on how he wrote as well as how he felt of the time that he had lived in.in two of his other works The Fall of the House of Usher and The Tell-Tale Heart some of Poes more dark and dreary stories often posses sed a theme of death and sadness that evoked him in his

Pilipinong Pamilya Pantawid Program free essay sample

These are the main findings of the recently completed assessment of the CCT – the first in a series of evaluations being done on the program – presented today by the World Bank in a public forum held in Quezon City led by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) with support from AusAID and the ADB Titled â€Å"Philippines Conditional Cash Transfer Program, Impact Evaluation 2012† the report confirms that children of Pantawid Pamilya beneficiaries are enrolling and attending schools, with improved health due to regular visits to health stations, and pregnant mothers getting proper care. I am pleased to know that the children of poor families are indeed enjoying better and improving access to education and better health services through Pantawid Pamilya,†Ã‚  said DSWD Secretary Corazon Juliano-Soliman. Along with other government programs aimed to reduce poverty, Pantawid Pamilya ensures that no one gets left behind in terms achieving holistic and inclusive growth†Among the Pantawid barangays (villages) surveyed, the report lists the following findings comparing enrolment and school attendance between beneficiaries and non-beneficiaries: * In Pantawid barangays, 76 percent of preschoolers are enrolled in daycare, compared to 65 percent in non-Pantawid barangays; * Among school children at age 6-11, 98 percent of children in Pantawid barangays are enrolled in school, as against 93 percent in non-Pantawid barangays; and * Children in Pantawid barangays from age 6-14 also have higher school attendance (95-96 percent) as compared to children in non-Pantawid barangays (91 percent). We will write a custom essay sample on Pilipinong Pamilya Pantawid Program or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The assessment is based on a the analysis of poor 1,418 households eligible for the Pantawid program from a survey covering 3,742 households in the provinces of Lanao del Norte, Mountain Province, Negros Occidental, and Occidental Mindoro. (Currently, there are more than 3 million poor families with more than 6 million children benefitting from the program). Pantawid Pamilya provides cash grants to poor households to encourage them to keep their children of age 0-14 in school and have regular health checks. Also, pregnant mothers are required to avail of proper medical care and their deliveries attended to by health professionals. Mothers are also required to attend family development sessions where they discuss topics on parenting and accessing social services in the community. In health, the study found that: * 64 percent of pregnant mothers in Pantawid barangays had antenatal care as against 54 percent in non-Pantawid barangays; * 85 percent of children in Pantawid barangays age 6-14 have undergone deworming as against 80 percent in non-Pantawid barangays; * 81 percent of children in Pantawid barangays at age 0-5 have taken Vitamin A supplements as against 75 percent in non-Pantawid barangays. According to Ms. Junko Onishi, World Bank’s social protection specialist, Pantawid Pamilya has contributed to reduction in the severe stunting among poor children 6-36 months of age in Pantawid barangays. Stunting in the first two years of life is known to cause irreversible damage later in life including lower educational attainment, reduced adult income, and decreased offspring birth weight. Therefore, reduction in severe stunting among poor children at this age will have long-term benefits, Ms. Onishi said. â€Å"This reduction in severe stunting indicates that CCT is enabling families to better care for their children,† said Ms. Onishi, who presented the highlights of the impact evaluation during the forum. â€Å"More parents in Pantawid barangays (villages) are feeding their children with high-protein food including eggs and fish, leading to improved nutritional status.   Ã¢â‚¬Å"Poor households under the program spend 38 percent more in education per capita   and 34 percent more on medical expenses per capita than their non-Pantawid counterparts. This trend indicates a shift in the spending pattern among CCT beneficiaries towards greater investments in health and educ ation of their children,†Ã‚  said Mr. Nazmul Chaudhury, World Bank’s country sector coordinator for human development, and one of the authors of the report. The study recommends that coordination among health service providers needs to be strengthened to ensure that beneficiary mothers and children get the services they require and to ensure continuity of care. Also, the study suggests exploring the possibility of extending coverage from the current five years, increasing the grant amount for older children, and improving school facilities and services. The impact evaluation study was funded by the World Bank and the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID). The study was led by the World Bank and   the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD),   in coordination with AusAID and the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The study aims to present empirical evidence on the key outcomes of Pantawid Pamilya. source:   Joint Press Release by World Bank and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (2013/03/1)| DSWD says No to Epal and Yes to Empowering Pantawid Pamilya Beneficiaries| | | Written by Pantawid Pamilya Social Marketing Unit   Ã‚  | Thursday, 31 January 2013 08:44| ShareThisNo more threats. Com). Without complete market research, a company can encounter humorous and Often embarrassing disappointments when it comes to cultural environmental factors. Pepsins marketing managers learned a tough lesson about the language differences and how a successful English based product slogan can become lost in translation. The Taiwanese consumers were reported to be taken aback by the Pepsi slogan Come alive with the Pepsi Generation, which translated into Taiwanese reads Pepsi will bring back your ancestors from the dead (Henderson, 2009). This marketing mistake caused obvious embarrassment among Pepsins top marketing managers, Hough this would not be the last time that they were too hasty in their pursuit of the international marketplace. The political environment includes the governmental or special interest groups that will influence and limit the various organizations or individuals in a given society. An organization will hire lobbyists to influence legislation and will run ads that state their point of view on public issues. The number of special interest groups has grown in number and power over the last three decades that puts more limitations on marketers. An example of this would be an example of response by marketers to special interests is green racketing, the use of recyclable or biodegradable packing materials as part of a marketing strategy. Social and cultural forces are the most difficult uncontrollable variables to predict. The marketers must be able to understand and appreciate the values of the environmental in which they operate. The social/cultural environment is made up of forces that will affect the societys basic values, perceptions, preferences and behaviors. The U. S. Values and beliefs include equality, achievement, youthfulness, efficiency, practically, self-actualization, and freedom. The changes in a social/cultural environment affect the consumers behavior, which in turn will affect the sales of products. The trends in social/ cultural environmental include individuals that will change view of themselves, others and the world around them while moving toward self- fulfillment. Technology can influence domestic and global marketing decisions and marketing and public relations common sense, especially when it opens any number of doors to being able to tap into a vast global marketplace. Information technology is increasingly becoming important as an enabler to being able to operate efficiently, interfacing with consumers and maintaining uncial accuracy and effectively managing resources. PepsiCo has embarked on a multilayer business process transformation initiative that includes the delivery of a SAP (a computer system that will link all of PepsiCo systems and processes) enterprise resource planning application (PepsiCo. Com). This application will help to divert the possibility of PepsiCo not being able to process transactions accurately and effectively or remain in step with the changing needs of the trade, which could result in the loss of customers. Failing to deliver this application on time or anticipate the necessary deadness and training needs could lead to business disruption Minority populations are growing faster then the population overall. Each year, racial and ethnic minorities constitute a greater share of potential consumers, employees, and retail customers. Because of this PepsiCo employees receive human rights training in which they explore the human rights intrinsic to all and the importance of sustaining an inclusive nature (PepsiCo. Mom). PepsiCo code of conduct requires all employees to follow local employment laws and regulations, including labor laws and treatment of employees. This type of thinking and training helps to show itself in the marketing practices of the company. In being able to achieve a high standard for ethical, social, and environmental views PepsiCo has helped to ensure that their reputation will take no damage which could result in a rejection of their products by consumers and a loss of br and equity (PepsiCo. Mom). Environmental factors can significantly influence domestic and global marketing decisions. As such, it is an organizations marketing managers responsibility to research legal, social, ecological, cultural, technological and ethical factors that may negatively impact the success of a product marketed. Past, present of future, it pays to invest in market research in the hope of revealing the potential of all environmental factors before launching a product or service domestically or globally. In conclusion, by assessing external factors will enable the company to position itself within its operating environment. A number of macroeconomic factors will have affected any company, and will continue to affect it. Environmental factor assessments help to gauge the direction and strength of he major trends that shape a particular industry. Sometimes these pose a threat while other times they can create new opportunities. In assessing the environment, it is important to find new business opportunities, new market places, and companies with which some form of cooperative arrangement can be developed.

Individual Rights vs Public Order Essay Example

Individual Rights vs Public Order Essay Example Individual Rights vs Public Order Paper Individual Rights vs Public Order Paper Essay Topic: Public Speaking Advantages and Disadvantages of Individual Rights vs. Public Order There are advantages and disadvantages to just about everything you can think of in this world. Two topics that can be very controversial to have an advantages and disadvantages discussion on are our individual rights and public order. We hold our individual rights very close to us and pride ourselves on the freedoms that these rights provide. We also see the devastation that can occur when the rights and freedoms we are given land in the hands of the wrong people. People that abuse their individual rights tend to disrupt public order and this is when we catch that glimpse and sometimes horror of one of the big disadvantages of individual rights verses public order. We are well aware of what individual rights are and how they apply to us, so we will come back to that, but what about public order? What exactly is that? Public order is in place to keep society as a whole safe from misdeeds. Public order is also a system in place that restricts some freedoms that people may want. Freedoms are the ideals in life that everyone can take advantage of no matter who they are. Public order is refraining from any acts of involvement that may lead to violence, which may be disrupting, while out in the public or any other acts or behaviors that may be illegal to do out in the streets. For instance, disruption in public order often times results in hindering someone else of their individual rights. Public order is considered to be disrupting the public in a way that may make being in the public unsafe. When violating public order, it is considered a crime, and can lead to jail time and or paying a fine if a conviction is obtained. However the real price to pay actually lands on the shoulders of society as our individual rights are infringed upon when public order is, well, not in order. As an American citizen you learn that you have individual rights and those rights come with having or sustaining public order. As Individuals living in an American society we all have individual rights. Our individual rights are our rights to define and sanction our freedom of relevance in a social America. One right we do have is the right to life. All the rest of the rights come with consequences or fine print. Our individual rights are there to equally provide us life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness in this world of social America. They exist to give people his or her freedoms, while that same freedom can allow people to take advantage of their freedoms. Freedom is the item that keeps the people of this country happy. People feel secure in what they are doing during their everyday lives. A person’s individual rights are what keep people happy throughout his or her life. People are given many different rights that make them feel happy and appreciated even if they do not recognize them. Individual rights are freedoms that let people choose who they want to be and also give them the fair treatment that they deserve to get as a citizen. Individual rights are the rights that people are given to keep them from being mistreated by the government or anyone else. Most of these rights are to keep the people from being mistreated by the Justice system. Our individual rights are mostly summed up within the first Ten Amendments, otherwise known as the Bill of Rights. The Bill of Rights helps to safeguard the citizens of this country. According to (National Constitution Center, 2008) â€Å"Nearly two-thirds of the Bill of Rights is devoted to safeguarding the rights of persons suspected or accused of crime†. These rights are outlined in the fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth amendments. They give people the right to â€Å"due process of law, fair trial, and freedom from self-incrimination, cruel and unusual punishment and being held in jeopardy twice for the same crime. National Constitution Center, (2008) Take for instance the first Amendment, it protects freedom of speech, press, religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; the right for people to peaceably assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of a grievance. (Bill of Rights, 2000-2009) The advantage of having this was so that people could peaceably seek out about the injustices of their country without being punished or harm for doing so. As time goes on you see that it is not so wrong to allow people to address their concerns. After all, that is the way a democracy is suppose to be done in a country where a person’s voice and opinion matters. This amendment allows the press to question people of a certain caliber and also ask questions that the world wants to know about. Another advantage is that when it comes to justice you have the right to speak whatever you want and it also allows you to be silent when you want. It also has the advantage of helping aid in speaking out when there has been an injustice to others and yourself. The disadvantage though is that, if expressing your first amendment right becomes violent, you can face jail time and pay possible fines. This disrupts public order. If you happen to be with an organization, you may have law enforcement officials surround you for the protection of others and for that particular organization; most of the time the protection is for the other people. This is where public order comes in to play. It also poses a disadvantage because the area that the organization is acting or addressing their first amendment right in cannot disrupt others who may have to cross paths through or around the organization. The area must remain safe and sufficient for all if not then the involvement of the law will commence. There is not complete freedom in expressing the individual right because it could affect public order. The advantages to having individual rights are being able to express yourself and be treated equally among society. However, the disadvantage is that the right you carry is limited according to what effect expressing it will have on society. Without public order, many of our rights would not carry the same significance. Public order places a boundary on our individual rights, but it is a boundary that is â€Å"for our own good†. If every right that is outlined for us had no boundaries or restrictions on it, our society would end up in chaos. Like mentioned before, our rights contain fine print that not everyone reads when signing on the dotted line. This fine print is what keeps public order while still allowing us to retain our rights we believe we are entitled to. Unfortunately, many people out there are not concerned with public order and only care about expressing and practicing their own rights with no regard to what effect it may or may not have on anybody else. Others are more concerned with public order and public safety, that they support rules or laws that put up invisible walls that box our rights in. They cannot wander free for fear of devastation or destruction to our society. Regardless of a particular point of view, we believe that anyone in a fair and honest discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of individual rights verses public order can see the advantages of embracing our proclaimed rights in America as well as the disadvantages and being able to admit the advantages and disadvantages of how American goes about maintaining public order. China's Aging Population Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

China's Aging Population - Research Paper Example The advances in health care that has raised the life expectancy to about 78 years have caused the china to change into an aging population. The high nutritional values in conjunction with the one child policy assumed by the modern day families in the country are also catalyst to aging population in China. The shift of China’s population to old age oriented might have a profound effect on her economy for the adults to be. The Chinese government will have to alter its budgetary policy in favor of the current situation and allow for heightened expenses. According to the international standards of population and demographic distribution, if more than ten percent of the county’s population is above sixty years of age, then this population is described as an ageing population. The Chinese government announced in 2000 that those beyond sixty-five years make about seven per cent of the national population. However, the expectation was that this trend would continue and expected that by 2050 more than thirty per cent of the country’s population would be more than sixty years. The basis of china’s aging population are just as those found anywhere in any other country (Robinson 231). The country has low infertility rate, the life expectancy has risen, and there has been cumulative effect in changes of birth and death rates. The country is and will continue to experience a decline in fertility rate due to the one-child policy. The government has been advocating for the adoption of this policy, thus it has been the main contributor to the changing structure of the Chinese population. The future of the Chinese economy is likely to be very prudent if measures to counteract the negative economic effects that may come along with the aging population are not set.
